The Pratishthan has over the years focussed not just on Indian theatre but its Asian counterparts as well. While the Poorva theatre festival [read here...] and seminar has been a turning point in its collation of material on Asian theatre in general, its effort has been particularly drawn to collecting books, journals, photographs, videos and seminar papers on Asian theatre. In forthcoming years, this concentration will increase further, as the Pratishthan involves itself actively in sourcing, and documenting, theatre material from Asian countries.

Asian Theatre Archives

Among those countries where it has already begun the process are Bangladesh, The Philippines and Japan. A process is underway to reach out to these and other countries, so that the Pratishthan becomes an Asian archival centre for theatre in one of the most vital and creative parts of the world. It would now like to begin a fresh activity dedicated to the translation of Asian plays in the English language.

Karanth on theatre and youth

"While doing theatre with children he uses his own sensibility and imagination specially in creating dialogues. This process is better than making children learn dialogues by heart because it creates the impression that it is not performed by elders but performed by Children for the Children."

Kalavarta, Bhopal, 1982

"His play Kamana (by Jai Shankar Prasad) produced with Lady Shri Ram College students was a great success in Delhi. Students feel that Karanth ji creates a situation and make you think and visualize it."

"Karanth believes that theatre is a continuous process and its ultimate achievement is doing theatre with the youth. Karanth believes in extra ordinary talent of the youth."

Kalavarta, Bhopal, 1989
